Colour-field: art meets science Free exhibition

This summer, the Twin Dome at the University Observatory will be showing the artistic exhibit colour-field over two weekends around the summer solstice.

Colour-field is the latest instalment at the venue, which has been the home of an art and science collaboration between artist Tim Fitzpatrick and astronomer Anne-Marie Weijmans since 2018.

Sound, colour and shadow become overlaid into a succession of changing perspectives in colour-field. The assembled colour forms repeat, intersect and sometimes reflect each other around the curved wall of the old observatory. Set against this physical presence of a re-imagined spectrum is an unfolding list of colours which might be said to be absent, withdrawn, lost or absorbed.

Colour-field and its immersive sensations in light and colour have expanded in every direction: all around the continuous wall, up into the dome itself and even beneath the visitors' feet. Stepping into the colour-field in June 2024 will be to be part colour-field and a component of the installation itself. You might also want to bring some colour with you!

The exhibition will be open at the following times:

  • Friday 14 June, 4pm to 8pm
  • Saturday 15 June, 10am to 4pm
  • Sunday 16 June, 1pm to 4pm
  • Friday 21 June, 4pm to 8pm
  • Saturday 22 June, 10am to 4pm
  • Sunday 23 June, 1pm to 4pm (this event)
