Tilcia Woodville-Price will present Visualising Uncertainty in Medicine: A Scoping Review

Abstract: Uncertainty is present at every stage of scientific research, but its inherent complexity means its disclosure remains a challenge across disciplines. When done effectively, its communication has proven beneficial across diverse audiences (Garcia-Retamero and Cokely, 2017), and has been found to increase knowledge, recall, and adherence in medical decision-making scenarios (Trevena et al, 2006). In this work we aimed to identify visual forms of communicating uncertainty or risk related to healthcare information, particularly graphical representations. We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed primary research and review publications.
In this talk, I will present our findings from this review, including a discussion of the medical topics, intended audiences, visualization formats, and evaluation of the visualizations we identified, as well as contextualising these findings within the landscape of existing research.

Bio: I am a 3rd year student supervised by Dr Areti Manataki and Prof Peter Donnelly. My research focuses on data visualisation in medicine, specifically on communicating uncertainty to diverse audiences by combining information visualisation with data-driven storytelling techniques.
