His expertise spans from medieval to early modern history, supervising research on various topics including English and Norman history, medieval and early modern political thought, and legal history.
Initially focusing on English history from the 10th to 13th centuries, particularly constitutional history, he has published extensively on the impact of the Norman Conquest on notions of kingship, succession, and tenure. In addition, he works on political thought, having edited influential texts like Vindiciae contra tyrannos, and studied the role of providential history in the works of Marsilius of Padua.
Professor Garnett's ongoing projects include a history of the Norman Conquest and editions of works by Bartolus of Sassoferrato.
