Wednesday Seminar Series Crafting uncontroversial internationalisms? Imperialism and the Third World in Esperanto media during the Cold War

Before Esperanto's grammar and vocabulary were created, a language ideology was established to justify the need for this constructed language. In conveying hegemonic national languages (like English, French, and Russian) as imperialist, Esperanto became, by contrast, inclusive egalitarian, international, and “neutral”. This perception gain prominence during the Cold War, when Esperanto speakers presented the language as a political neutral alternative to ‘imperialist' English and Russian.

The research seminars are intended for the academic staff and postgraduate researchers in the School of International Relations. Other interested students should contact the Seminar Convenor, Dr.J.S. Murer ([email protected]).
