Surveillance and the Common Good: A Capabilities Approach

CSRP Weekly Seminar led by Dr Eric Stoddart (University of St Andrews) at the St Mary's College Hall.

A focus on people's capabilities raises intriguing questions about the contribution of surveillance technologies to fostering and/or inhibiting human development. In a critical discussion of Martha Nussbaum's 'capabilities approach' this presentation will explore its saliency for a practical theological enquiry into contemporary cultures of surveillance. Through a particular focus on the methodological underpinning of his forthcoming monograph, 'The Common Gaze', Eric's talk will be of particular interest to researchers whose work falls under the broad umbrella of practical theology.
