Storytelling through Qualitative Participatory Research to Promote Resilience after Trauma

Structural violence leads to a disproportionate burden of trauma among marginalized communities. There are few multilevel interventions to promote resilience after trauma that are informed by the input of these impacted communities. Over the past decade, Dr. Woods-Jaeger and her team have been partnering with youth and adults exposed to structural violence to develop an intervention, Youth Empowered Advocating for Health (YEAH), that promotes resilience after trauma with specific attention promoting youth agency and active resistance to structural violence. Through qualitative participatory research and storytelling this intervention aims to promote resilience after trauma on individual, interpersonal, and community levels. This presentation will outline the development, implementation, and current focus of YEAH and share a testable framework to guide community-partnered research efforts that aim to promote sustainable change for and with marginalized communities.
