Stitching and Collaging the Archive Creative Research Workshop

How can we explore archives differently?
What can we learn about our sources when we engage with them creatively?
In what way does creative practice develop new knowledge and understandings of our research?

Building upon her own creative and practice-based research, St Andrews honorary lecturer Vanessa Marr, principal lecturer at University of Brighton, invites you to collage and stitch with a selection of archival materials in this session for the St Andrews Centre for Contemporary Art. We will create unique compositions from paper and tracings, stitched into cloths, such as dusters or vintage cloths, that contextualise their meaning.

A range of materials will be provided, including archived publications from The Design Council 1944-1994 that inform expectations of women's domestic roles in the home, 20th century magazines, and ephemera.

Please feel free to bring your own sources to cut up and explore too, for example photographs, letters, magazines, or print outs of work you're researching. Please bring photocopies of any originals that you don't want to cut up or stitch.
