Seminar -- Dr Fabio Augusto Morales (UFSC) The Fabric of the Ancient World: the concept of integration fields and the practice of Global Ancient History
Dr Fabio Morales is a Lecturer in ancient history at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil. For the last few years, he has been working on Hellenistic and early imperial Greece.
Dr Morales' talk discusses the ways in which the fabrics of the Hellenistic world were stitched together, or, to put it less metaphorically, the societies of the Hellenistic period constructed and were constructed by the connections they established between themselves. These connections are discussed in terms of the actions and corresponding social fields of integration that modulate them. Specifically, he will explore the problem of the interaction between the Panhellenic, imperial and commercial fields in the Hellenistic period from three perspectives: global microhistories, incorporated comparisons and integrated history. In doing so, he seeks to discuss the problem of mediation between the macro and micro scales, as well as to experiment with the possibilities and the limits of ‘Afroeurasia' as a new unit of analysis for Ancient History.
Seminar hosted jointly by the School of Classics and the Institute for Transnational & Spatial History
