School of English Careers Event Academia and Interesting Alternatives?

This careers event will highlight career pathways following a Masters degree. To stay in academia or not? Further study? What alternatives are there? We hope to demystify that junction in a student's life in a series of talks given by:

Ryan Patterson (Careers Centre staff). Ryan will focus on career planning, possible destinations, transitioning from Masters student to professional. You will also learn what the Careers Centre can do for you.

Christine Rauer (School of English Careers Officer). This talk will focus on the attraction and the difficulties involved in academic career pathways. Plus the need to have alternative plans ready, and how to go about setting them up and cultivating them.

Alumni from the School of English: former Masters students will report back on where they are now, and will speak about their own career interesting planning experiences.

There will also be a Q&A session – please bring up your queries about the matters covered or other aspects, and your worries and thoughts on the current job market.

The event is primarily aimed at School of English Masters students. But if you're an undergraduate student interested in what may come after your degree, or if you're a Masters student from another School, you're also welcome to attend this. We hope to make this a positive and informative event for all.

In case of questions about the event, feel free to email Christine Rauer, [email protected]

The event is mainly intended to be in-person, so please come and join us in the Union. But we will try and get a Teams stream set up as well, and hope to circulate a Teams link for that. We will also try to record the event, or parts of it.
