Sands 24: Smoke Sauna Sisterhood Pay what you can: £10, £8, £6

Anna Hints' atmospheric, almost mystical, feature-length documentary debut invites us to become part of a supportive, witty, sweaty female collective who gather in a traditional Estonian smoke sauna, as their mothers and grandmothers have done before them.

With an ethereal soundtrack and intimate cinematography, the film is both deeply personal and strikingly universal as the women share their jokes, desires, histories and secrets — and help each other heal past traumas. This tribe of women, baring their bodies as well as their souls in this hot, smoky wooden cabin, find ways to make everything that was once dirty, clean, by sharing and supporting one another.

Smoke Sauna Sisterhood received numerous accolades, including the directing prize at the Sundance, and the European Film Academy prize for Best Documentary.

Shown in Estonian with English subtitles. Join director Anna Hints for a Q&A after the screening (live captioned).
