Saints Talk: Struan Watson Modern and contemporary Scottish art at the University of St Andrews

Join Development colleagues for the next instalment of the Saints Talk series with Struan Watson on ‘Modern and Contemporary Scottish Art at the University of St Andrews'.

Struan Watson is Assistant Curator of Art and Photography at St Andrews. He supports the development, management and research of the University's fine art collection, with particular reference to the Harry and Margery Boswell Collection, the University's collection of modern and contemporary Scottish art. Its 30th anniversary in 2025 will be marked by the exhibition From these Parts: Scotland, Art and Identity, on display at the Wardlaw Museum from October 2025 to February 2026.

Struan holds an MA and an MLitt in the History of Italian Renaissance Art from the University of Glasgow. He is a member of and contributor to the Scottish Society for Art History, a member of the British Art Network (BAN), and a recipient of the 2024 Art Fund Curators Programme Award at Frieze Masters.

In this talk, Struan will discuss the development of the University's modern and contemporary Scottish art collection, provide insights into selected artworks, and demonstrate how they can be placed within a broader context of Scottish visual culture. From the modernism of William McCance to the contemporary art of Sekai Machache, with the work of Sandy Moffat and Maud Sulter in between, the talk will offer an overview of Scottish art from 1900 to the present, highlighting the University Collection's role in documenting this history.

Following the talk, attendees can ask questions in a live question and answer (Q&A) session.
