Saints Talk: Professor Vincent Janik Marine Mammal Bioacoustics: how whales, dolphins and seals use sound in the ocean

We are delighted to welcome you to our next Saints Talk by Professor Vincent Janik, Marine Mammal Bioacoustics: how whales, dolphins and seals use sound in the ocean via Microsoft Teams.

Sound waves travel much faster and with less transmission loss in water than they do in air. Many marine animals therefore use sound as their main method of communication and orientation. Marine mammals produce the loudest biological sounds in the ocean and have sophisticated ways of using them, not only when calling but also by listening to those of others.

Professor Janik will present examples of marine mammal sound use from his own research and explore how anthropogenic noise can influence the behaviour of these animals.
