Saints Talk: Professor Richard Whatmore Democracy and Empire

We are delighted to welcome you to the next instalment in our Saints Talk series from Professor Richard Whatmore, Democracy and Empire.

Democracies should not be empires, being unions of one free people or equally free peoples. Yet there is a direct connection between mass democracy and the world of guns, coal and steel as they emerged together in the nineteenth century.

This talk reveals that from the time democracy became a general political option during the French Revolution, it consistently failed to do what its first proponents hoped. The history of democracy continues to have considerable implications for our politics.

If you have missed any of the past Saints Talk Lectures, or can't make the live stream of this one, you can watch them again on our YouTube channel.

We hope to see you on Thursday.
