Robert Fergusson Anniversary Celebration Wardlaw Museum Monday 14th October, 6:30 for 7pm

Robert Fergusson (1750-1774), the celebrated Scottish poet, Robert Burns's “elder brother in the muse” died tragically young 250 years ago this month. As well as a hugely influential and innovative poet in Scots and English, he was a student at the University of St Andrews and wrote some excellent, entertaining — and cutting — poems about his time here, and the staff who taught him.
This event will celebrate Fergusson's anniversary with 5 contemporary poets responding to Fergusson and reading his and their own work: it will feature Sheena Blackhall, Rosa Campbell, Robert Crawford, Bill Herbert, Don Paterson and the Principal Dame Sally Mapstone, with a new piece of music in honour performed by Gordon Howe and Michael Philip.

There will also be a chance to see the maquette of Fergusson owned by the university and some of the library's holdings associated with him.

The event is from 7 – 8.30pm, with an informal drinks reception from 6.30 pm. It is hosted by the School of English alongside the Wardlaw Museum, St Andrews University Library and the St Andrews Burns Club. For further information please contact Dr Peter Mackay on [email protected]
