Pride Denied Screening and Discussion at The Barron - Free

Pride Denied: Homonationalism and the Future of Queer Politics explores the evolution of LGBT pride events, focusing on local artist and activist responses to World Pride in Toronto. The film highlights Pride's roots as a protest, tracing its origins in the 1960s, and critiques the commercialization, neoliberalism, and “pinkwashing” that have distanced Pride from its political beginnings. From the Stonewall Uprising to the Bathhouse Raids, the documentary reflects on how the celebration of queer identity has been transformed by corporate interests and global tourism, while raising critical questions about homonationalism and the intersection of state power, race, and queer politics.

The screening will be followed by a small group discussion, with an open Q&A session with guest speaker Kenny Christie, Trustee of Dundee Pride. The event will be held at the Barron, top floor of the Byre, which is wheelchair accessible. Refreshments will be provided, and donations are welcome at the door.
