Picturing Peace in Congo Photography Exhibition

The Visualising War and Peace project will be hosting a launch event on Monday 5th June, 6-8pm, at the Byre Theatre, to mark the opening of a three-week photography exhibition featuring the work of award-winning photographer Hugh Kinsella Cunningham. His project on the women's peace movement in the Democratic Republic of Congo has just won first prize (‘documentary') in the Sony World Photography Awards; so it has been a huge privilege for our Visualising Peace VIP students to collaborate with him on a short exhibition here in St Andrews. As well as shining a light on a conflict that rarely makes the headlines, Hugh's colourful images and portraits document the slow work of grassroots peace-building in the DRC, particularly the determination of women who advocate for human rights, justice and security in their communities. This connects to wider research which our Visualising Peace students are doing on representations of peace and peace-building, and on the power of images to shape how we interact with the world and each other.
