PEPtalk: Researching Net Zero How to direct policy as energy scientists?

The implementation of Net Zero strategies is urgent, but a complex undertaken. Energy researchers play a fundamental role in shaping our future energy landscape, in paving the pathways for just transitions. But how can we make sure that our findings reach policymakers? How can we share our understandings of challenges and potentials, so it is translated into better policies and practices? This panel discussion will address these and related questions bringing together the experience of three energy scientists working within the UK and Scottish energy policy landscape.

Panellists:

Christian Calvillo Munoz is Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Energy Policy, University of Strathclyde, and member of the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) and the Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC). Having strong expertise in the analysis of energy efficiency, the decarbonisation of heat and transport, fuel and transport poverty, hydrogen and industrial decarbonisation, he has worked on several projects informing Scottish energy policy, including Scotland's Net Zero Roadmap.

Jessica Hogan is Energy Analyst at Regen. Having received her PhD in Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews, she is now translating her research ambition to foster community engagement in energy planning into consulting and advising businesses as well as policymakers on how to increase community acceptance of renewable energy projects, most recently with this report on prioritising shared ownership in the energy transition.

Ronan Bolton is Reader in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, University of Edinburgh, is Co-Director of the UKERC and Co-Founder of the Electricity Markets Research Hub. Having a background in mechanical engineering and environmental social science, his work examines the interconnected policy, market and regulatory challenges of transforming carbon-based energy systems and enabling the development of lower carbon energy infrastructure. He has recently led the project on Energy Regulatory Governance and Decentralisation, funded by UK Research and Innovation.
