The Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence presents the Paul Wilkinson Memorial Lecture 2019 with Professor Tore Bjørgo of the University of Oslo.
Professor Bjørgo will present findings from an international comparative project that includes case studies on vigilantism against migrants and minorities in 17 countries. It covers a broad variety of groups and activities, ranging from the Ku Klux Klan in the US, the Hungarian Guard and similar paramilitary in Central and Eastern Europe, Hindu cow vigilantes in India, to the Soldiers of Odin and similar vigilante street patrols.
These vigilante activities can be grouped into four main types: vigilante terrorism, lynchings and pogroms; vigilante militias; vigilante border patrols; and vigilante street patrols.
Professor Bjørgo will analyse why organisations and activists engage in vigilante activities, and under what kinds of circumstances these different vigilante activities tend to emerge, flourish or fail.
This is a public lecture and all are welcome to attend.
