In this talk, Dr Barnes will draw on his experience using participatory methods research in Rio de Janeiro favelas (impoverished and informal neighbourhoods). The talk will explore the processes associated with undertaking this kind of research including arriving to the field; ethics and positionality; working with individuals and organizations; self-care; leaving the field; and continuing collaboration.
