Health Care Under Occupation: challenges for cancer and post-trauma care in Gaza, Palestine STEPS Autumn Event

STEPS is pleased to have The Bute Medical Society as our co-host for this event.

Speakers:
GERRY O'HARE
Gerry O'Hare is an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist in the West of Scotland. He visited the West Bank for several years in a personal capacity to support cancer nursing in Palestine. This led to the development of the first ever postgraduate diploma cancer/palliative care nursing at Bethlehem University, including Glasgow placements for Palestinian nurses. Subsequently, cancer nurse education has been included as part of the
twinning agreement between the cities of Glasgow and Bethlehem. He has visited Gaza on three occasions with MAP, most recently supporting the first cancer conference in December 2019. He has also supported the visits of young people from Aida refugee camp Bethlehem on culture and sporting visit to Glasgow.

DR MALAKA SHWAIKH
Dr Malaka Shwaikh is an associate lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies at the School of International Relations, the University of St Andrews. Born in Palestine, she has been involved in several health projects, the latest of which is the entrepreneurial refugee fund (funded by the University of St Andrews) to support refugees in Palestine, Syria and Turkey with health-related projects. She is a trustee of Firefly International, which provides children affected by war with education and mental health and education support. Firefly works with locally-led organisations. In Gaza, they provide a much-needed grassroots-led service for children suffering from trauma. Malaka also researches prisons as spaces of power, resistance, and peacebuilding. In 2021, she co-founded Freelancers in Gaza with Candace Amani to connect youths in Gaza with clients around the world and provide them with mentorship. In her spare time, she loves to spend time hiking in Scotland. She finds purpose in giving back to the community, including through teaching, mentorship, and volunteering.
