Ghost projects: visions, promises and failures in African spatial development initiatives STACEES Research Seminar - Professor Detlef Müller-Mahn (University of Bonn)

In this seminar Professor Detlef Müller-Mahn from the University of Bonn will discuss the power of vision and developmental dreams in East Africa. The focus will be on growth corridors, infrastructures, and hydro-development schemes, i.e., activities that are often labelled as megaprojects.

Politicians and development agencies present these projects as blueprints for a better future. However, many of these projects never materialise, at least not as originally planned. ‘Ghost projects', as Professor Müller-Mahn calls them, are not visible, but they do leave traces on the ground. In that sense, the African continent is spotted with ghosts, white elephants, and ruins of development.

This will be an in-person event, in St Mary's Quad, Lecture Room 2.
