Gesualdo Six: Fading - £22, £18 (Music Centre members), £5 (U35)

Making a welcome third appearance in St Andrews, one of the most successful vocal ensembles in the UK, fresh from their BBC Proms debut, preview their forthcoming US tour in the McPherson Recital Room. The concert will reprise their album ‘Fading' (Gramophone Editor's Choice) traversing 600 years of music for the service of Compline. Since the fourth century, Compline has marked the end of the day, ushering in the darkness of the night. Much of the music evokes a contemplative atmosphere, including renaissance polyphony by Lobo, Sheppard and Palestrina that contains startling harmonic shifts and expressive word painting. Then there is a turning point; the light returns, birds sing, and flowers bloom once more, with contemporary reflections by Veljo Tormis, Joanna Marsh, and Sarah Rimkus.

“The Gesualdo Six are the real deal. Far from fading, they're just coming into focus.” (Gramophone)
