Gerald Finzi -- The Man and His Music

Join us for a day celebrating the musical world of one of Britain's most distinctive 20th
century composers, who enjoyed close links to the University of St Andrews. During the day, there will be an exhibition in the foyer of items from the archive left by Finzi to the University.

Morning session

10:30 Introduction and 30-minute song recital by Music Centre vocal scholars

11:30 Finzi, Thorpe Davie and St Andrews: contributions from Diana McVeagh (Finzi biographer and editor of a recent collection of Finzi's letters), Zen Kuriyama (US-based Finzi scholar) and members of the University's Special Collections team.

12:15 The Fitzwilliam String Quartet and oboist James Eastaway present music by Finzi alongside Cedric Thorpe-Davie's Phantasy-Quartet and Vaughan Williams' String Quartet no. 2.

Afternoon session

The Fitzwilliam String Quartet invites community string players of all ages and standards to play works preserved in Finzi's own music collection, left to the University. This includes music performed by Finzi during the dark days of the Second World War with the Newbury String Players, among which repertoire by Handel, Warlock and the English 18th century composer Capel Bond.
