From Language Learning to Intercultural Learning: Rethinking Educational Practices A talk and Q&A by Dr. Ana Sofia Hofmeyr, hosted by the St Andrews Journal of International and Language Education (SAJILE).

From Language Learning to Intercultural Learning: Rethinking Educational Practices

How can intercultural learning become a meaningful part of everyday educational practice rather than an isolated language classroom topic or an assumed outcome of international exposure? In this talk, Dr. Hofmeyr will share practical approaches to integrating intercultural competence into language education and the wider learning environment. She will explore how teachers can use materials, activities, and interactions both within and outside the classroom to encourage curiosity, reflection, and engagement with diversity. Recognising that educators work within different institutional structures, Dr. Hofmeyr will also discuss the roles of teacher education, leadership, and institutional support. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own contexts and identify ways to make intercultural learning more intentional, inclusive, and sustainable.
