English Visiting Speaker Seminar: Dr Eleanor Parker, Brasenose College Oxford 'The Anglo-Saxon Calendar: Old English Poetry Reading and Conversation'

Wednesday, 25 March 2026 (Lady Day), 4.15pm, Lawson Seminar Room, Kennedy Hall, School of English, The Scores, St Andrews,
‘The Anglo-Saxon Calendar: Old English Poetry Reading and Conversation', with Dr Eleanor Parker (Brasenose College Oxford), author of Winters in the World

The Anglo-Saxon liturgical and seasonal calendar will be at the centre of this event, via a conversation between Dr Eleanor Parker, author of Winters in the World (2022) and Dr Christine Rauer, editor of the Old English Martyrology (2013). Presenters and audience volunteers will also read out aloud the tenth-century Old English Menologium (231 lines). Particular attention will be paid to the section on the Annunciation (25 March), the day of our event! Later also known as Lady Day, this feast holds particular significance for the English cult of the Virgin Mary.

All welcome! No booking or prior experience with Old English required. Handouts with the text and translation of the Menologium and period-style refreshments will be provided. In case of questions, contact Christine Rauer, [email protected]
