Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara) St Andrews networking event

Since 1933 Cara (the Council for At-Risk Academics) has offered a lifeline to academics at risk around the world. In total, 135 UK universities and research institutes now offer places for those needing to escape, and provide funding to support Cara's work.

Over the last three years Cara's Fellowship Programme — today's version of the original rescue mission from 1933 — has seen an increase of almost 400% in the number of appeals for help it is receiving, as a result of international crises.

To respond, Cara has had to double the size of the team doing all the painstaking work involved in setting up and supervising a successful placement. In 2023 more than 220 Cara Fellows were in placements in the UK, in many cases with their families.

In June 2024 Cara launched a new series of ‘university roadshows', aimed at increasing the number of people at its partner universities who are familiar with what Cara does and at giving them an opportunity to contribute individually to support Cara's work, should they wish to do so.

So come along to Parliament Hall on Wednesday 30 October to learn more. Stephen Wordsworth, Cara's Executive Director, will outline what Cara does today, a Cara Fellow at the University of St Andrews will speak about their experiences, and Chris Goldie, Cara's fundraising consultant, will outline what Cara is now doing to broaden its fundraising base and continue its work for many more years.

Refreshments will be provided from 3pm and a drinks reception will take place after the discussion. We look forward to seeing you there.

Attendees should register for this event by Tuesday 29 October.
