Coal and Energy Transitions in India

We would like to invite you to join us at an online seminar being hosted by Dr Itay Noy, Research Fellow within the Centre for Energy Ethics, Department of Social Anthropology, surrounding Coal and Energy Transitions in India.

India is one of the biggest coal producers and carbon emitters in the world. While the country's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, recently pledged to cut its emissions to net zero by 2070, this remains a formidable challenge given India's high reliance on coal-driven energy, as well as the dependence on coal-based livelihoods of the many communities inhabiting its coalfields.

Bringing together participants from anthropology, ecological economy, international development, and human geography, this event will explore different aspects of India's intertwined energy and coal regimes, and address some of the issues, questions and paradoxes around energy transitions and justice in the subcontinent.
