Book Event: Power and Resistance A Conversation about On Top of The City and Translating Novels from Putin's Russia
A conversation between Abi Karas and Sarah Gear about their books On Top of the City (Bloomsbury, 2026) and Translating Novels from Putin's Russia (Routledge 2026).
Abi and Sarah will explore the challenges, difficulties and ethical questions involved in researching, writing and translating work on contemporary Russia. How does one investigate and analyse contemporary Russian society and culture and what methods and lenses best highlight underseen phenomena? And, what choices and responsibilities come with translating and publishing fiction from Putin's Russia?
We will also discuss the journey from thesis to book and the practical and intellectual decisions involved in that process.
