Beyond compliance: ethics in scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in EAP/language education

This event, organised by the Centre for International, Language and Teacher Education Research (CILTER), will be presented by Neil Adam Tibbetts, Senior Lecturer in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Education at the Centre for International Education and Languages, King's College London. Previously at University of Bristol he coordinated in-sessional EAP for Masters students across university faculties and he co-authored ‘A guide to in-sessional EAP: Paradigms and Practices' (2023, Routledge).

This session will look at what ethics means and what ethical approaches are in the context of Scholarship in Teaching (SoTL). It will draw on my ongoing experiences from developing training and providing guidance for academic staff involved in English for Academic purposes (EAP), Academic skills and Language teaching across departments in a large London based university. It will seek to answer what ethics means in the broadest sense, consider the positioning of non-research contract teaching staff in the wider university context and examine the challenges and affordances that brings for developing meaningful, ethically-minded scholarship.
