Studying the Alawite sect has always been a challenge—cloaked in secrecy due to their close ties with the Syrian regime and the immense difficulty of accessing their guarded community. Through interviews with members of the Alawite community, Rahaf Aldoughli and Haian Dukhan uncovered what really happened to them during the war. They spoke of shifting loyalties, fragile ties with the regime, and tense dynamics with the Sunnis and other sects as the Syrian Civil War raged on.
