The event is hosted to mark the launch of Chinese Studies at the University's School of Modern Languages.

Ai Weiwei's most recent films include Human Flow (2017), Coronation (2020), and Cockroach (2020).

His memoir, 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows, was published in 2021. It details the tribulations faced by the artist and his father, the poet Ai Qing, as they attempted to live and defend an aesthetic and artistic vision of life in modern China and beyond.
