SUMMARY:Saints Talk: Professor William Austin
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the latest lecture in the Saints Talk Series – Nature-based solutions for climate change, people and biodiversity by Professor William Austin of the School of Geography and Sustainable Development – on Tuesday 23 February 2021 at 5pm GMT via Microsoft Teams*. Nature-based solutions (NbS) involve working with nature to protect existing ecosystems and restore previously degraded ecosystems to enable them to store carbon and provide habitat for wildlife. If well designed and robustly implemented, NbS can benefit climate change mitigation and adaptation, enhance biodiversity and support local livelihoods. Bill Austin’s research is directed primarily at reconstructing past climate change from marine records. His recent focus has been on the potential of Blue Carbon coastal ecosystems and their sediments to store vast quantities of carbon that would otherwise contribute to climate change as Greenhouse Gas emissions. Bill also currently leads a project on coastal golf courses, coastal change and blue carbon resources as part of the R&A sustainability initiative Golf Course 2030. We hope to see you at this online event. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/saints-talk-professor-william-austin/
