DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Middle East, Central Asia and Caucasus Studies (MECACS) presents     Women's magazines and Netherlands-Iran Relations 1959-1979 - Dr Maaike Warnaar - Leiden University     During the reign of Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi the Netherlands and Iran (Persia) fostered friendly relations. The particular warmth of these relations, both politically and economically, went hand in hand with a public cultural interest in Iran as an ancient, mystical civilization. This representation reflected in various media, including women's magazine. This paper discusses the representations of the Shah and of Iran in Margriet and Libelle, two leading women's magazines. It discusses how these representations interacted with political discourse and counter discourse at a national level. It shows hpw these represetations formed a background for the particular warmth of Netherlands-Iran relations, and also the endurance of these relations in the face of growing resistance against the Shah both in Iran and in The Netherlands.       Maaike Warnaar is assistant professor at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies. She obtained her PhD at the University of St Andrews in 2011 under supervision of Raymond Hinnebusch. Her PhD research on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's foreign policy ideology was published as a monography by Palgrave in 2013. In 2016 Maaike received a grant from the Netherlands organization for scientific research (Veni) to research cultural representations and Netherlands-Iran relations in the 1960s and 1970s.
