SUMMARY:Reconciliation and Reconstruction: Towards an Understanding of Spatial Politics as a Vehicle of Conflict Resolution - Dr Nour Halabi, University of Leeds
DESCRIPTION:This public lecture will primarily focus on how the Syrian conflict is situated and emplaced within the spatial politics of pre-2011 Syria. It introduces spatial politics as an important factor in understanding the ramifications of the Syrian Revolution and its aftermath. Furthermore, Halabi argues that an understanding of the spatially-grounded determinants of inequality and injustice is crucial to any future plans for reconstruction and reconciliation.    Nour Halabi is a Lecturer of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds and the Vice-Chair of the Race Network of the Media Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA).    Her interdisciplinary research examines the interactions between mobility, social movements and global media and discourse. Recent publications include Discourses in Action (eds. Krippendorff & Halabi, 2020); 'The Spatial Politics of the Syrian Revolution' in Middle East Critique (2019); and 'If These Walls Could Speak: Borders and Walls as Communicative Devices' in Interventions: Communication Research and Practice (Peter Lang, 2018).    Nour’s forthcoming book Radical Hospitality examines the history of United States immigration policy and its media coverage, with an eye to how the ethical ideal of hospitality shapes the treatment of immigrants who arrive at America’s gates.
