SUMMARY:The Juffair Dilemma: Arab Nationalism, Alignment and ‘National-Popular Collective Will’ in Bahrain
DESCRIPTION:Hsinyen Lai joined the School of International Relations in January 2019, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.    He holds a BA in Arabic from National Cheng-Chi University, a MA in Political Science (with major in International Relations) from National Chung-Cheng University in Taiwan, and a MRes in Politics from the University of Edinburgh. He was awarded his PhD in Politics from the University of Edinburgh in 2018.    His doctoral research, drawing on the insights of Antonio Gramsci aligned with Uneven and Combined Development as a historical sociological approach, explained why Bahrain joined the Gulf Cooperation Council in 1981 and how geopolitical competition, late-developing capitalist state formation and dynamics of regime-civil society relations interrelated with the evolution of Arab nationalism in Bahrain.    This event will be online and will take place via Microsoft Teams.
