SUMMARY:Aspects of Belief in West Asia and the Mediterranean Basin: 1000 – 100 BCE
DESCRIPTION:Discussion of the ancient world usually assumes that the ancients believed the gods were intimately involved in everything from the realm of politics and climatological phenomena to cultic rituals and daily activities. Yet recent scholarship challenges this reductive presentation of ancient beliefs. Therefore, we might ask: what does it mean to “believe” in the ancient world? The School of Divinity, organisers of the event, encourage scholars and students from a number of disciplines (Archaeology, Assyriology, Biblical Studies, Classics, History and Philosophy) to participate in this symposium as the aim is to foster an interdisciplinary discussion about ancient belief.
