SUMMARY:Teaching with AI Responsibly: Ethics, Engagement, and EMI Contexts
DESCRIPTION:CILTER webinar series Title: Teaching with AI Responsibly: Ethics, Engagement, and EMI Contexts Speaker: Dr. Naghmeh Babaee, Full-Time English and Liberal Studies Faculty, LaSalle College Vancouver, Canada. Abstract With the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, questions of ethical use have become increasingly urgent. Beyond high-profile concerns such as deepfakes, educators must navigate issues of bias, fairness, transparency, and academic integrity. While a growing body of research explores AI applications in education, fewer studies offer concrete guidance on how to implement these tools ethically and creatively, particularly in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) contexts. Informed by the Seoul Declaration for safe, innovative, and inclusive AI, this talk critically examines the use of AI in higher education across international settings, highlighting key ethical challenges. Bridging research and practice, it offers practical, research-informed strategies to support responsible AI integration and to enhance student engagement in online (synchronous and asynchronous) and in-person EMI learning environments. Bio Dr. Naghmeh Babaee is an award-winning researcher and educator with a Ph.D. in Second Language Education and over 20 years of international experience teaching English and Liberal Studies. Her research focuses on socio-cultural and critical perspectives in language education, particularly the experiences and academic performance of English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) contexts. She has received several prestigious awards, including a Best Paper Presentation at the 2023 International Conference on Education and the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. Dr. Babaee also reviews for academic journals and delivers professional development seminars, with a strong commitment to advancing inclusive language and literacy education. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/teaching-with-ai-responsibly-ethics-engagement-and-emi-contexts/
