SUMMARY:School of Geography and Sustainable Development Autumn Lecture: Professor Doug Benn
DESCRIPTION:When I tell people that I am a glaciologist, often their first question is, Is there any ice left? The answer is, yes there is, but ice cover is shrinking almost everywhere, in some places much faster than others. In this talk I will explore recent patterns of climate change and its impact on glaciers, ice sheets and global sea levels, illustrated with examples drawn from my experiences and research, from the Arctic and Antarctic to the Himalaya. Doug Benn is Professor of Environmental Change at the School of Geography and Sustainable Development at St Andrews. He has 40 years of experience of research in many areas of glacier science, including glaciospeleology, iceberg calving, glacier surges, and Snowball Earth. From 2006 to 2015 he was Professor of Glaciology at the University Centre in Svalbard, at 78 degees N the World's most northerly Higher Education institution. He is a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and a recipient of the Seligman Crystal, the highest award of the International Glaciological Society. This talk is free to attend and open to all but please book your ticket(s). Refreshments will be served after the lecture. This event will be live streamed and a link will be made available on the School webpage - https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/geography-sustainable-development/ - on the day of the event. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/school-of-geography-and-sustainable-development-autumn-lecture-professor-doug-benn/
