SUMMARY:East German Cinema and the Holocaust: Konrad Wolf 100
DESCRIPTION:Sterne (Stars), Konrad Wolf, 1959. In German with English subtitles. In Bulgaria in 1943 Wehrmacht sergeant Walter is stationed in a small city and supervises civilian Bulgarian workers at a car repair shop. Not far away, Greek Jews are housed in a camp for a few days. They are to be deported to Auschwitz. Walter meets the Jewish woman Ruth, who asks him for help for a pregnant woman through the barbed wire. Walter gets closer to Ruth, has conversations with her about hope and humanity, and develops feelings for her. After the film there will be a question and answer (Q&A) session with Professor Seán Allan of the School of Modern Languages at St Andrews and Elizabeth Ward of the University of Leipzig and author of East German Film and the Holocaust. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/east-german-cinema-and-the-holocaust-konrad-wolf-100/
