SUMMARY:Clemens Poole: Making noise as an American Artist in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Our series of talks about arts and politics in the apocalyptic times is back. Join us online for a talk with Clemens Poole, a US artist based in Ukraine, who will speak about the meaning of music and noise in war time Kharkiv.    Clemens Poole is a US American artist and musician, based in Kyiv since 2019. He has worked with the Ukrainian context since 2014, and his projects have been shown in Ukraine, the US and Europe. He is co-founder of Kyivpastrans Records. Recent curatorial projects include:     	Working Group -- Sound   	Let the long. Road. Lead. To. Stairs in. The Heavens   	Nevertheless   	Drones for Drones compilation series    He holds a BFA from the Cooper Union and an MA/MSc from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.    Clemens says: "As a resident of the Quiet Centre in December 2024, I spent two weeks researching the neighborhood and the local cultural community. My creative focus was on sound and noise, and the tension I perceived between the 'quiet' of the Quiet Centre and wartime Kharkiv more generally, and noise as my currently preferred form of creative expression. I performed multiple live streamed sets after curfew and played one apartment concert with local musicians Inominne Vo and Monomonster. For the final presentation I performed a 'silent' concert in which I played a live set during the party but with no speakers and only one set of headphones, allowing only one person in the audience to hear the music at any given moment."    Discussion will consist of a 15-minute talk followed by a brief discussion and a question and answer (Q&A) session. The dispatches will be moderated by Dr Jeffrey Murer of the Centre for Arts and Politics and Viktoriia Grivina, a St Andrews PhD student and author from the Quiet Centre residency.
