SUMMARY:The power of narrative in fuelling social change: lessons from the frontlines of advocacy and philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:As global challenges, from democracy backsliding to the erosion of civil rights, intensify, how can philanthropy, nonprofit strategy, and rights-based advocacy adapt? This guest lecture, led by Kindred Motes, an award-winning leader in nonprofit, philanthropic, and social impact strategy and founder of KM Strategies Group, will explore how strategic communications, digital advocacy, and values-centred philanthropy shape policy, mobilize communities, and drive funding toward urgent social issues. Drawing from his work with major NGOs, foundations, and charities, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), GirlRising, Global Citizen, USAID, the Wellcome Trust and NYC Health, Kindred will unpack how storytelling and digital strategy influence everything from nonprofit fundraising to domestic civil rights legislation and international human rights policy. He will examine how philanthropy is evolving in response to political turbulence, the shifting landscape of nonprofit funding under the second Trump administration, and the role of communications in shaping the path forward. With a focus on career pathways for students in international relations, the discussion will highlight how future leaders can leverage communications, digital platforms, and policy engagement to drive meaningful change. A Q&A session will follow, offering students the opportunity to explore emerging global trends, career opportunities, and the future of social impact. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/the-power-of-narrative-in-fuelling-social-change/
