DESCRIPTION:Step back in time to the dawn of science fiction cinema with Aelita: Queen of Mars, the 1924 Soviet silent film directed by Yakov Protazanov. Join us for an unforgettable evening as concert pianist Matthew Shiel improvises a captivating live score at the Laidlaw Music Centre.   Aelita: Queen of Mars is a pioneering masterpiece that blends the tumultuous post-civil war Soviet Russia with an imaginative journey to Mars. Follow engineer Los on his quest to the Red Planet, where he joins forces with the captivating Queen Aelita to spark a revolution against the tyrannical Elders.   Pianist Matthew Shiel will enhance this cinematic curiosity with an improvised live score. Known for his dynamic and captivating performances, Shiel's improvisational live score promises to elevate the film's narrative and transport the audience to the visionary world of 1920s science fiction.   This screening is part of the Wardlaw Museum's Alien Worlds programme and will include an introduction from Dr Emily Finer from the School of Modern Languages.
