SUMMARY:Colour-field: art meets science
DESCRIPTION:This summer, the Twin Dome at the University Observatory will be showing Tim Fitzpatrick’s artistic exhibit colour-field over two weekends around the summer solstice. A dramatic expansion of the 2023 installation in colour, colour-field is the latest instalment at the venue, which has been the home of an art and science collaboration between artist Tim Fitzpatrick and astronomer Anne-Marie Weijmans since 2018.     As in 2023, the installation is timed around the days of the summer solstice and so reacts and interacts with the daylight which now floods through the newly installed East window, a window into a space which had remained dark (except for the light of stars) since the Twin Dome’s construction more than 45 years ago. Sound, colour and shadow become overlaid into a succession of changing perspectives in colour-field. The assembled colour forms repeat, intersect and sometimes reflect each other around the curved wall of the old observatory. Set against this physical presence of a re-imagined spectrum is an unfolding list of colours which might be said to be absent, withdrawn, lost or absorbed. Colour-field and its immersive sensations in light and colour have expanded in every direction: all around the continuous wall, up into the dome itself and even beneath the visitors’ feet. Stepping into the colour-field in June 2024 will be to be part colour-field and a component of the installation itself. You might also want to bring some colour with you! The exhibition will be open at the following times: Friday 14 June, 4pm to 8pm Saturday 15 June, 10am to 4pm Sunday 16 June, 1pm to 4pm Friday 21 June, 4pm to 8pm (this event) Saturday 22 June, 10am to 4pm Sunday 23 June, 1pm to 4pm Visit the Observatory website for more information. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/colour-field-art-meets-science-4/
