DESCRIPTION:The School of History invites you to the annual ILCR and St Andrews Institute for Intellectual History Winch Lectures on 'Normal for Norfolk': two legal antiquaries on the Norman Conquest, by George Garnett (Oxford) taking place over three days, Monday 13, Tuesday 14 and Thursday 16 May.    The Monday lecture will be followed by a wine reception, the Thursday lecture by wine and pizza.    There are no questions immediately after the lectures, but Professor Garnett will hold a 'cafe hour' at Zest at 11am on Wednesday 15 May for anyone wishing to ask him questions and there will be a seminar for discussion arising from the lectures at 10am on Friday 17 May.    George Garnett is a renowned Professor of Medieval History at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford. His expertise spans from medieval to early modern history, supervising research on various topics including English and Norman history, medieval and early modern political thought, and legal history.    Initially focusing on English history from the 10th to 13th centuries, particularly constitutional history, he has published extensively on the impact of the Norman Conquest on notions of kingship, succession, and tenure. In addition, he works on political thought, having edited influential texts like Vindiciae contra tyrannos, and studied the role of providential history in the works of Marsilius of Padua.    Professor Garnett's ongoing projects include a history of the Norman Conquest and editions of works by Bartolus of Sassoferrato.
