SUMMARY:The causes and consequences of global police militarization
DESCRIPTION:In recent decades, police forces around the world have become more militarized---adopting the weaponry, organisational structures, and accountability typical of military forces. In this talk, Dr De Bruin explains how and why militarized policing spread internationally, and what the political and security consequences have been.    Erica De Bruin is an Associate Professor of Government at Hamilton College, and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Security and Conflict Studies at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. Dr De Bruin is the author of How to Prevent Coups d'état: Counterbalancing and Regime Survival (Cornell University Press, 2020), and has published widely on topics in civil-military relations, civil war, and policing. Her current research, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, focuses on the global spread of police militarization.
