SUMMARY:2023 St Andrews Sanctuary Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The University of St Andrews is a University of Sanctuary, committed to making Higher Education accessible for those seeking sanctuary and to helping to foster a culture of welcome throughout the UK. Our Annual Sanctuary Lecture is an opportunity to hear from experts (by-experience and by-training) about themes and issues connected to sanctuary. This year's lecture will be given by Roza Salih. Roza came to Scotland with her family as a child in 2001, from Iraqi Kurdistan. In 2005, at the age of 15, she co-founded the Glasgow Girls with fellow pupils from Drumchapel High School to stop dawn raids and the detention of children by the UK Home Office. A film, documentary and a musical has been made about their campaign to end child detention in the UK. Roza graduated with a BA (Hons) in Law and Politics from the University of Strathclyde. At University she was the Vice President for Diversity and Advocacy for the Students Association. She represented over 20,000 students, was also elected to the National Union of students International Students Committee and the NUS UK Student trustee board. Roza has always been passionate advocate for equality and inclusion in education, and was instrumental in introducing the first asylum seeker scholarships in Scotland - at Strathclyde University. Roza is the first refugee to serve as a Councillor in Scotland, having been elected to serve the people of Greater Pollock in May 2022. Join us to hear about sanctuary from this expert-by-experience. In-person event will be followed by a drinks reception.
