SUMMARY:Ghost projects: visions, promises and failures in African spatial development initiatives
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar Professor Detlef Müller-Mahn from the University of Bonn will discuss the power of vision and developmental dreams in East Africa. The focus will be on growth corridors, infrastructures, and hydro-development schemes, i.e., activities that are often labelled as megaprojects.    Politicians and development agencies present these projects as blueprints for a better future. However, many of these projects never materialise, at least not as originally planned. 'Ghost projects', as Professor Müller-Mahn calls them, are not visible, but they do leave traces on the ground. In that sense, the African continent is spotted with ghosts, white elephants, and ruins of development.
