SUMMARY:(Re)thinking Inclusive Academic Conferences (Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies)
DESCRIPTION:Many non-traditional PGRs/PGTs struggle to apply successfully to give papers at academic conferences. Likewise, many academic conference organisers do not know how to best accommodate such researchers, even when they wish to bring in diverse voices to their events. As such, this project is designed to create a space to discuss how we can address this issue. The aim of this event is for PGRs/PGTs from non-traditional backgrounds and conference organisers to have a conversation on the struggles they face in conference submissions and organisations, respectively, and the anticipated outcome is that the participants will come out with a better understanding of what others who are different from them are struggling with. By creating a space for in-depth conversations about their struggles, the aim of this event is to create an environment to foster more inclusive submissions and presentations at academic conferences. Currently, British academic conferences generally have artificial barriers such as eloquent English writing skills, interest in topics relevant to the Anglophone worlds, etc. By creating an inclusive academic conference, we can enrich our scholarly conversations by bringing in diverse perspectives. Presentations from: Calida Chu, Teaching Associate, University of Nottingham; Yinxuan Huang, Research Fellow, London School of Theology; Ann Gillian Chu, Visiting Fellow, University of Leeds. This event is made possible by the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Accessibility Fund from the School of Divinity, University of St Andrews. Please reserve your place by 5pm on 13 September 2022. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/rethinking-inclusive-academic-conferences-theology-divinity-and-religious-studies/
