SUMMARY:Significant Others: Maud Sulter in Relation
DESCRIPTION:A symposium in celebration of Scots-Ghanaian artist, photographer, writer, educator and feminist Maud Sulter (1960-2008).Taking her iconic photographic series Significant Others (1993) as a starting point, this symposium in collaboration with Glasgow Women's Library will trace the connections between Sulter's photographs and her curatorial practice and networks. With invited artists, writers, curators and researchers Dr Tiffany Boyle, Camila Cavalcante, Tomiwa Folorunso, Professor Dorothy Price, Natasha Thembiso Ruwona, Tako Taal, Camara Taylor and Professor Susannah Thompson, we will look at Sulter's legacy in relation to Black and queer feminist writing, artmaking and organising and reflect on her continuing influence in the context of art practice, collections and research. Significant Others was acquired by the Harry & Margery Boswell Collection at the University of St Andrews in 2019. The series is currently the focus of a student-led curatorial intervention by Museum and Gallery Studies MLitt students, Maud Sulter: Portraits of a Family Tree which will be on display in the Wardlaw Museum and School of Art History at St Andrews until 30th May 2022. Significant Others: Maud Sulter in Relation is supported by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews, and the St Andrews Centre for Contemporary Art.
