DESCRIPTION:In this public seminar, Dr. Gavan Titley draws on his recent book 'Is Free Speech Racist?' (Polity 2020) to consider why racism has become integrated into recent debates about freedom of speech, how these complex terms are understood, and how freedom of speech has been used by some as a mechanism for validating racist ideas.    Dr Gavan Titley is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies with research interests in the politics of race, racism and multiculturalism in European politics, freedom of speech and ideas of 'hate speech' in digital media environments, the future of public service media, and the integration of social theory to media theory.    His publications include The Crises of Multiculturalism: Racism in a Neoliberal Age, written with Alana Lentin (Zed Books 2011); the co-edited National Conversations: Cultural Diversity and Public Service Media (Intellect Books 2014); After Charlie Hebdo: Terror, Racism, Free Speech (Zed Books 2017); Racism and Media (Sage Publications 2019); and Is Free Speech Racist? (Polity Press 2020).
